Quaker submission to Ofsted consultation

Quakers in Britain made a submission to and Ofsted consultation at the beginning of April 2019 highlighting the research into the benefits of peer mediation and restorative approaches.

Ofsted, which inspects schools in England, has drafted a new framework which will have separate judgements on “quality of education” and “behaviour and attitudes”. While there is some positive language about “fairness” and “relationships” in the new framework, Quakers feared the focus on “behaviour” would discourage schools from developing good conflict resolution.

The submission drew on the research that shows punitive approaches to behaviour in schools are bad for relationships and learning, and the wealth of evidence showing the benefits of restorative approaches including peer mediation.
