Conflict Resolution Education in Sheffield Schools Training (CRESST) has its origins in a small project piloted by the Development Education Centre (South Yorkshire), which trialled a series of school based conflict resolution education programmes. These were complemented by the setting up and supporting of buddying and playground friend schemes. The current organisation has developed from a project devised and funded by Sheffield Central Quaker Meeting.
A sizeable legacy left to the Sheffield Central Quaker Meeting in 2001 provided an opportunity to create an organisation that focused on the development and implementation of conflict resolution education and peer mediation schemes across Sheffield.
Work began in early 2004. Educational programmes and supporting material were developed and individual schools were identified as the first potential partners. The initial take up of the CRESST offer was effective and many schools embraced the programme and have since moved on to develop a “Whole School Approach”, where the ethos of the programme is extended into all aspects of school life, from policies and procedures of the school through to informing relationships and communication with staff, parents and governors.
Towards the end of the first two academic years (September 2004 – June 2006), the longer term future and sustainability of the project was addressed by the management committee. A company limited by guarantee, with a Board of eight directors, was formed in September 2006 with the view to taking over the CRESST project’s responsibilities, and in December 2006 this company gained UK charitable status. The legal responsibility for the CRESST project was handed over to this company from Sheffield Central Quaker Meeting on the 1st April 2007.
We would like to thank Sheffield Central Quaker Meeting for its invaluable support during the start up of this organisation and for its ongoing support.
