CRESST Peer Mediators' Conference

CRESST Peer Mediators' Conference - Wednesday 20th October 2011

Mediators and Mentors

Young people and their adult mentors from 15 Sheffield schools were represented at the 7th annual Peer Mediators Conference on Wednesday 20th October.

Over 60 children, who volunteer their time as peacemakers in Sheffield schools, attended workshops and creative discussions about their peacemaking role. At the end of the day they were rewarded with some hilarious antics by local entertainer Maynard Flip Flap.

Working Hard

The purpose of the conference was to bring together these talented young people, mainly in years 5 and 6, who have all been trained in conflict resolution and mediation. They give their time and energy to enable others within their schools to sort out their minor problems and disputes without resorting to violent behaviours.

Sharing

The conference was a fantastic opportunity for them to share their experiences and ideas.

Michelle, a teacher at Arbourthorne told us, "The children couldn't stop talking about how fantastic their day had been. They loved it!! The children got so much out of it. They enjoyed meeting other mediators."

Carfield Primary School

Carfield Primary School report on the success of peer mediation…

“Since we introduced the peer mediation scheme, the number of incidents which adults have had to intervene in has dropped dramatically. Each year we have more children who want to be mediators and each year the mediators become increasingly effective.”

Seven Hills Secondary School

Conflict Resolution Education at Seven Hills Secondary School

Project Co-ordinator Cheryl Smart has been delivering training to teachers at Seven Hills Secondary School in Sheffield. Seven Hills is moving to the All Saints School site at Granville Road in Sheffield and is the amalgamation of the former East Hill Secondary School and Oakes Park School. This was a fantastic opportunity for CRESST to build on previous work in both schools in preparation for their move to the new site this summer.

Some comments from the training so far:

So helpful - thank you, can’t wait for the next part. Lots of ‘stuff’ to think about.”

Thank you for an excellent session. I really enjoyed the theory – more of the same!! Staff always like the activities.”

Training the Trainers

CRESST Co-ordinator Cheryl Smart led a master class on the 5th and 6th of April for a group of Sheffield teachers. As a follow-up to the one-day introduction to Conflict Resolution Education (CRE), this two-day course covered the deeper, more practical issues and ideas for training children and young people to become peer mediators. In addition, advice was provided to enable participants to establish a conflict resolution policy for their organisation that enhances the policies on behaviour, bullying and pastoral care.

----------------------------------------------

“I felt we covered a lot of work in two days. I felt very supported.”

Tracey, Rivelin Primary

“A well structured training session with lots of opportunities to practise skills and reinforce them. Useful information about how to set it up in school.”

Sue, Abbey Lane

“I enjoyed the process of working through the handbook explaining how we would go about teaching it to children and the chance to discuss scenarios and how we thought it could work.”

- Hannah,Phillimore Community Primary

"The training has been thought-provoking and has given me further insight into how peer mediation can be powerful and is a skill everyone should use. I want to continue with the mediation and empower young people to develop excellent social skills.”

- Caroline, Phillimore Community Primary School

Cresst 6th Primary Peer Mediators Conference a resounding success

The Primary Peer Mediators’ conference was held at the Quaker Meeting House on 20th of October 2010. Arbourthorne, Carfield, Dobcroft, Greenhill, Hunters Bar, Marlcliffe, Mundella, Netherthorpe, Nook Lane, Parson Cross, Philmore and Wharncliffe Side Primary schools were represented by 63 Junior Peer Mediators and 22 adults and the event was supported by four peer mediators from Seven Hills Secondary school.

Activities included a workshop led by Peerlink leaders Ben and Marrianne on co-operation and shared understandings of the key concepts of mediation delivered through drama, and activities such as making paper aeroplanes in pairs with one arm behind your back. Another creative workshop led by Sophy Hallam and Jessie Macnair was designing positive playgrounds. The third workshop led by David Seddon involved creative writing. There were extensive opportunities for mediators from different schools to meet others and share their experience and ideas.

Some examples of the participants’ views of what they had learned on the day were:

  • The word ‘impartial’ and what it means
  • How to co-operate with other mediators from other schools
  • The importance and value of mediation
  • The importance of non verbal communication

What they most enjoyed were the drama and craft activities, meeting new people with similar experiences and all those commenting said the entertainment provided by Mr Flip Flap was a highlight of the day
